Definition: Kinetic energy is the energy of motion in a mechanical system. It is different from potential energy which is the energy of an object at rest. When a force is applied to an object at rest, the potential energy is converted into kinetic energy as the object begins to move. Friction changes kinetic energy into heat and will eventually cause the object to stop moving.
